The Easton Family and Fox Brothers Employee Perks

22 February 2018

An illustrated talk by Colin Spackman.

For around 100 years from the late 18th Century, the Easton family from Bradford on Tone were involved with managing the Duke of Wellington’s estates, patenting hydraulic rams as well as surveying routes for canals, railways and tithe maps among other exploits. Later generations of the family specialised in engineering, both locally and nationally, that contributed to Brunel’s railway bridge at Saltash, Prince Albert’s workshops on the Isle of Wight and waterworks around the world. In 1902, Fox Brothers provided their employees with profit sharing, sick pay, maternity leave and a pension – well before such ideas became national policy. Come along and hear more about both of these significant local enterprises.

3,000 years of bells.

26 April 2018

A talk by Tom Harris on the 3,000 years of bells used to call people to prayer. The history of bells starts in South East Asia and involves related art and culture. Tom has a lifetime of experience travelling around the world searching for evidence of bells together with his local experience in Taunton of bell ringing. The technique of controlling the timing of each bell note in a peal was developed in England and provided around the English-speaking world by the Whitechapel foundry, which closed down early last year. The weight of the bells in English bell towers can cause damage to the structure and there is continual work required to ensure safety. Tom’s slides will show the wide diversity of designs and decorations.
