30 Mar 2026

Wellington Local History and Museum Society reported on the year to 31 December 2025 at its Annual General Meeting held in Wellington Prep School Hall on 26 March. The meeting was followed by a talk from Dave Farrow, CEO of Wellington Town Council.

In his report, outgoing chairman, Mark Lithgow, made reference to the refurbishment of the museum over the winter months.  He considered that the result was a balance between bringing the museum into the 21st century and freshening it up, whilst retaining its character.  He thanked the backroom volunteers who have driven the refurbishment and the stewards who man the museum during the open season.  The new chairman is Mike Menhenitt with Mark Lithgow the vice-chairman.

After the AGM Dave Farrow, the Chief Executive of the Town Council, talked about the changes that had taken place over the last couple of years or so, following the former County and District Council’s ceasing to provide certain non-statutory services. The Town Council took up the challenge and now oversee new functions such as maintenance of the Park and other open spaces in the town.  This has been of great benefit to residents.  Mention was also made of the success of the community hub in the former Kings Arms.  Looking ahead, the challenge of new housing development proposals in and around the town had implications for infrastructure provision.  He considered that Somerset Council should be taking a strategic approach to this, rather than dealing with individual planning applications on a piecemeal basis.
