German Prisoner of War (PoW) Camp in Wellington Booklet Published

Local historian and Wellington Museum steward, Louise Winborn, has put together a booklet recounting the limited history of the German Prisoner of War (PoW) Camp in Wellington. The booklet shares with readers the lives of PoWs, playing sport and performing in their own theatre group, as well as working on local farms. It includes the stories of three German men, two of whom stayed in the area and one who married a local girl.

Louise’s next project is researching the American GI’s that stayed in Wellington during WWII until the build up to D-Day. She will then be moving on to the evacuees who were evacuated to Wellington during WWII from towns and cities that were prime targets for German bombers.

If any local readers have any stories of these three subjects Louise would be interested in hearing them. You can contact her through the museum email-
